A brief history

Bruce Tuthill, Peter Wells and Charles King, joined together in 1986 to form King and Tuthill Architects. They built a strong reputation as a firm whose partners maintain direct involvement in each project and participate in meetings with clients, building committees, town authorities, and the public from the initial conceptual studies through completion of the project. With the retirement of Charles King in 1996, Peter Wells became a full partner and the name was changed to Tuthill and Wells Architects, L.L.C.

The firm maintains a general practice with experience in a broad range of building types including churches, municipal buildings, and retail facilities, housing and private residential work. Most recently, however, libraries have been the major part of the work, completing more than 47 projects in the past 15 years, 28 of which have been major additions and renovations to historic buildings. The effort has been to renovate the facilities for expanding needs with new electronic equipment for today’s technologies, upgrade for current life safety, building and handicapped codes and restore the historic buildings to their original conditions.

The office policies are based on the commitment to quality in architectural design and function and personal service to our various clients. Each owner/user, site, program and budget is different and, therefore, every building will be a product of those specific conditions. The combined career experience of the partners provides expertise in programming, site evaluation, feasibility studies, presentation materials, fund raising, cost analysis, contract documents, and construction administration.

The office is organized so that the Partners remain involved with the projects from initial conception through construction administration and final completion. Both Peter Wells and Bruce Tuthill have more than 25 years each in private practice with experience in a vast variety of public and private projects ranging from very small buildings to major complexes. Having experienced the full range of the profession, both Bruce Tuthill and Peter Wells find working directly on the Projects with the Clients to be the most rewarding and enjoyable. There is the involvement with the Building Committees, the Town Officials, the interaction with the team members and the participation at public hearings that all have contributed to this philosophy. It is for these reasons that the principals will be directly involved in all meetings and the production of the work throughout the entire project.
