The Sherman Library

Sherman, CT

The history of the Sherman Library Association can be traced back to 1901 when a group of Sherman women began meeting occasionally to discuss books and current events. In 1914 fund raising was started for a library building. More than a decade later, $8,000 was raised and the Sherman Library became a reality in the "Town Center," much of which is an Historic District listed on both State and National Registers.

The original building is a Colonial Revival Style with a Gambrel roof and Palladian end windows.  In 1962 an addition was built that doubled the library’s area and improved the HVAC system and added toilets and a sink. Another building campaign was undertaken in the 1980's and a children's room was added bringing the total area to 4,200sf.

Today, the library is planning another addition of 8,800 sf which includes the restoration of a 900sf historic barn.  The barn will be the meeting and program room for the library and a community room for the Town.  The remainder of the addition will have a new Children's library, teen area, an art gallery, a social area for gathering, expanded non-print collection and work space for the staff.
