The existing Acton Public Library located on Old Boston Post Road in Old Saybrook contained 7,000 square feet and was desperately in need of additional space. In 1999, construction began on a 14,000 sf addition which was completed in 2002. Most of the additional space has been added on the ground floor with a small area for a meeting room and staff work areas on an upper floor.

The library has two entrances because of two parking areas on the site. Both lead patrons to the main Circulation Desk and a central atrium space which provides natural light into the center of the building. One of the entrances is through an art gallery and gathering area where changing exhibits and displays are provided. A 30 long tile mural depicting the history of Old Saybrook is a permanent display on one of the walls.

Priority was given to the public areas by locating all of them on the Main Floor. This includes all the adult collection, the children's library, teen area and circulation. The Meeting Room and staff areas are located on an Upper Floor that surrounds a central atrium with natural light.
