Cragin Memorial Library

Colchester, CT

The Cragin Memorial Library is a landmark building located in Colchester, CT directly across the street from the Town Green.  The original 4,000 sf library was constructed in 1905 by the Cragin family and remained unchained until 2002 when the building was expanded to a 20,000 sf state of the art public library facility. The exterior is beige brick with limestone trim and a standing seam copper roof.
The interior of the main library is flooded with natural light from large palladian windows strategically located throughout the building.  Library tables are located within the stack area to provide convenient reading areas for patrons. The carpet patterns, colors and borders were selected to emphasize traffic paths throughout both floors of the building.
The original Reference Room in the 1905 building was completely renovated and converted into a quiet Reading Room and Board Room.  The original wood floors were stained dark to compliment the tomato bisque walls and new white insulated glass windows.  Today, this is one of the most popular rooms in the library.
