Avon Free Public Library
The Avon Free Library, on Country Club Road was built 26 years ago to replace the original small library located on Route 44. The library was renovated in the 1990’s but not extended. Today, the space is inadequate for the Town’s needs and Tuthill and Wells Architects has been commissioned to design an addition that will more than double the area from 18,000 sf to 40,000 sf and completely renovate the original building.
Schematic designs have been completed and the project is now awaiting financing from the State Library Construction Grant plus Town Funding and fundraising
The extended facility will feature additional parking and all departments will be enlarged. A new Meeting Room will accommodate 150 people and will overlook a new landscaped reading garden and courtyard as will other major areas in the building. The Children’s Library and the Young Adults will be on the second floor that will have access from the existing stair tower and elevator plus a new elevator and new stair towers designed to match the well-liked original staircase.
Externally the building has been designed to be fully compatible with the original architecture but with the added features of two story windows to maximize natural light. The building will qualify for LEEDS silver certifications
